Dale Pendell, Gary Snyder | 4.15
In Pharmako/Poeia, Dale Pendell offers a mesmerizing guide to psychoactive plants, from their pharmacological roots to the literary offshoots. “This is a book,” writes Gary Snyder, “about danger: dangerous knowledge, even more dangerous ignorance.” Against the greater danger, ignorance, Pendell strikes a formidable blow, as he proves himself a wise and witty guide to our plant teachers, their powers and their poisons. “Pharmako/Poeia is an epic poem on plant humours, an abstruse alchemic treatise, an experiential narrative jigsaw puzzle, a hip and learned…

Materia Medica Of Western Herbs
I bought this book when I started my natural medicine degree. It is written by a New Zealand herbalist and is an amazing resource that lists plants with all their active constituents and also studies on how the plant works. This is one of the best books on herbal medicine to read if you are looking for some in-depth scientific explanations as to how and why these plants work. Academic reading can be a bit dry, but this is an amazing resource.

Can Herbs Really Help You Heal
Currently, there is a huge body of evidence to support the healing nature of plants. While some of these studies may not be as rigorous as those for pharmaceutical drugs, they still show many plants to be effective for addressing some health conditions while promoting whole-person well-being.
For example, St. Johns wort has long been used by herbalists to elevate low moods. Recent studies show that this is more than the placebo effect at work: This herbal remedy can be just as effective as antidepressants in reducing symptoms associated with mild-to-moderate depression in some people.
Another example is the use of ginkgo biloba to support brain function. Anecdotally, people swear by it to boost their memory and focus.
In all, there are hundreds of different studies to prove the efficacy of various herbal remedies, which are published in peer-reviewed journals such as Phytomedicine, Planta Medica, and the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
For anyone whos skeptical about some herbal remedy, browsing through the studies published in the above journals can help to alleviate some concerns. Either way, you can be sure that many herbal remedies have been used for thousands of years and continue to be popular because they work.
Plants For The People
This book is stunning. Beautifully laid out with a section on how to make your own remedies, oils and oxymels as well as a materia medica section explaining the plants and how and why they work as they do. Erin is an Australian herbalist and this book highlights what we are trying to do with Wild Dispensary – bringing plants to the people.
