Jesus Suffered To Save Us
He was beaten for our sins . Again, this refers to His treatment before His death on the cross.
- Matthew 26:28
- For this is my blood of the covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.
- 1 Corinthians 15:3
- For I delivered to you as of first importance that which I received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.
- Galatians 1:4
- Jesus gave himself for our sins to free us from this evil world we live in. This is what God our Father wanted.
- 1 Peter 3:18
- For Christ suffered once for peoples sins . a righteous Man suffering for unrighteous people, so that He could bring you to God . He was put to death physically, He was brought back to life by the Holy Spirit .
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. John 19:1-3
Jesus suffered on the cross for your salvation . In other words for your spiritual healing not physical.
Barnes Notes: literally, it is healed to us or healing has happened to us. The healing here referred to, is spiritual healing, or healing from sin. Pardon of sin, and restoration to the favor of God, are not unfrequently represented as an act of healing.
What Does It Mean To Be Healed By His Stripes
Just this week, I heard someone quote these scriptures in prayer as they prayed for the healing of a loved one. Lord, Chris is in the hospital. We lift him up to you, by your stripes he is healed. As the prayer ended, I wondered if it was really my place to tell them, the scripture was taken out of context. The power of the cross wasnt meant for our physical healing, rather our spiritual healing.
These two passages are central to the topic of healing, however they are misapplied and often misunderstood. The word healed when translated from both Greek and Hebrew can mean spiritual or physical healing. However the context of both Isaiah 53 and 1 Peter 2 make it clear that they are referring to spiritual healing. The verse is referring to sins and righteousness not disease and sickness.
Have you been wounded by sin, rejection, loss, or betrayal that has cut you to your core? Are these wounds still fresh and open? Like slicing cutting your finger, the negative spiritual effects of painful physical events, leave our souls reeling for comfort, peace, and wholeness. Only Jesus can heal that.
Christ Defeated Death By His Death
He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked– But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
Christ was led to death, yet death could not hold His perfect, sinless body. “Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”
Christ committed no lawlessness “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
The Lord, God the Father, cleansed Him, God the Son, of His wound because His body could not remain subject to corruption and death. The offering made by Christ enables man to receive the same healing and eternal life.
Easter Hymn of Ancient Christianity
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life!
This was the great, redeeming work of Christ, to bear our iniquities and reconcile us to Him.

With His Stripes We Are Healed Isaiah : 5
Pilate delivered our Lord to the lictors to be scourged. The Roman scourge was a most dreadful instrument of torture. It was made of the sinews of oxen, and sharp bones were inter-twisted every here and there among the sinews so that every time the lash came down these pieces of bone inflicted fearful laceration, and tore off the flesh from the bone. The Saviour was, no doubt, bound to the column, and thus beaten. He had been beaten before but this of the Roman lictors was probably the most severe of his flagellations. My soul, stand here and weep over his poor stricken body.
Believer in Jesus, can you gaze upon him without tears, as he stands before you the mirror of agonizing love? He is at once fair as the lily for innocence, and red as the rose with the crimson of his own blood. As we feel the sure and blessed healing which his stripes have wrought in us, does not our heart melt at once with love and grief? If ever we have loved our Lord Jesus, surely we must feel that affection glowing now within our bosoms.
See how the patient Jesus stands,
Insulted in his lowest case!
Sinners have bound the Almightys hands,
And spit in their Creators face.
With thorns his temples gord and gashd
Send streams of blood from every part
His backs with knotted scourges lashd.
But sharper scourges tear his heart.

The Meaning Of By His Stripes We Are Healed

The following is a transcript of the video above featuring Chris DeRoco explaining the true meaning of “By his stripes we are healed”:
I think one of the most damaging, I guess, scriptures that have been used within the church is, “By his stripes we have been healed” And this is coming out of Isaiah 53:5. And people have used that phrase to claim that because Jesus died on the cross, therefore we can expect to be healed in this life and that Jesus actually died for our physical healing in this life. And therefore what’s left is us for then to just appropriate what Jesus has promised us.
Well, we don’t need to get into what Jesus has and hasn’t promised us, but we can look at this phrase in context and it’s clear that Isaiah was talking about the wound of sin being healed of sin. It just says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace. That with his stripes, we are healed.”

How Did Jesus Get His Wounds And Stripes
In an effort to understand the truth of these passages, lets take a look at both Isaiah 53:5 and 1st Peter 2:24 in context.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him
And by His scourging we are healed.Isaiah 53:5
and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness for by His wounds you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24
The first time we come across this passage is when Isaiah describes what about happen to Jesus. He describes the suffering of the Messiah and then writes the reasons for His suffering: He was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities .
The prophet Isaiah was pointing out that our sins required an atonement. Our sins required forgiveness. Our sins needed to be washed off each of us. But the traditional way Gods people atoned for sin in the Old Testament was through the blood sacrifice of animals performed at the Temple. In order to provide atonement and to be washed of our sins, a perfect sacrifice was coming for all of mankind: Gods only son, Jesus.
Whenever we address prophecy or prophets of the Bible, we need to understand individuals like Isaiah were sent by God to warn Gods people, the Israelites. These warnings were often not heeded and largely ignored because they were called to repent of their sins and idolatries with the threat of punishment and sometimes reward.
Our Sin Problem Or Our Physical Problems
What is noteworthy here is that nowhere does Isaiah speak of any physical problems that would be cured by Messiah. It is clearly for our transgressions and our iniquities that He is bringing healing.
One of the greatest false teachings of todays Evangelical Church is that we are healed physically by His stripes, i.e.: His work on the cross. Look through Isaiah 53:5 and you will not see one mention of any physical problem. Look at Isaiah 53:4. Review Isaiah 53:6. You will find no mention of being physically healed by the work of Messiah.
Our second verse in 1 Peter 2:24 is no different. Peter writes about the work of Jesus on the cross. He explains that Jesus bore our sins on the cross. He teaches that this was done so that we could live righteously. Again, there is no mention of being physically healed by his work on the cross.
I have heard so many people take this phrase out of context and use it either in prayer or as an explanation for why sick or injured people should be confident of healing. Heathers in the hospital? Lord, by your stripes she is healed. Bobs back went out? Dont worry Bob, by His stripes you are healed. This is not only unbiblical but also foolish. No one is healed physically by the work of Jesus on the cross.
All are healed spiritually by His crucifixion. The work of Jesus on the cross heals every single person of their sin problem.

The Meaning Of By His Stripes You Were Healed
Thousands of Christians use this passage to state that Jesus work on the cross was not only for sin but also for sickness. They believe the healing this passage speaks of is referring to an immediate physical healing not only spiritual healing. They believe this healing can be applied now by faith.
This is Part 2 of our Misused and Abused Scripture Series. Listen to Part 1 titled: Does God Really Not Wish That Any Should Perish? 2 Peter 3:9
This interpretation belongs within the greater prosperity gospel position. But is it right? Are these peoples interpretations of this passage accurate? Is Peter speaking of access to immediate physical healing through faith in Christ? In this episode of Real Christianity, pastor Dale Partridge applies the grammatical and historical hermeneutic to examine the words and context to arrive at a faithful reading and theological understanding of the passage.
Isaiah 53 And Jesus Christ
Let’s go through the 53rd chapter of Isaiah and explore the meaning of its text in relation to Jesus Christ.
O Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
“He has no form or comeliness” relates to Christ as He sat upon the foal of an ass He was despised among the people and humbled Himself even unto death.
God became dishonored, for Christ assumed a true human nature. “O marvel at the loving-kindness of the Word, that for our sakes He is dishonored, that we may be brought to honor.”

How His Stripes Heal Us
John MacArthur sheds clear light on the matter in his commentary on 1 Peter 2:24 :
Christ died for believers to separate them from sins penalty, so it can never condemn them. The record of their sins, the indictment of guilt that had them headed for hell, was nailed to the cross . Jesus paid their debt to God in full. In that sense, all Christians are freed from sins penalty. They are also delivered from its dominating power and made able to live to righteousness .
In other words, this death to sin and becoming alive to righteousness is the healing work of Jesus actions. It is the healing work of his stripes. Both Peter and Isaiah meant the wounds of Jesus were a part of the process.
Due to mankinds sin, which brought separation from Gods fellowship, God sent Jesus to endure the sufferings and the brutal execution on the cross, “in our place,” as our substitute, so that all mankind could have a “bridge” back to the fellowship and benefits of God. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” .
When you accept Christ into your heart, the spiritual healing begins because you are choosing to receive and accept Gods forgiveness of your sins. You are no longer separated from Christ because He now lives in your heart. Here are 3 ways we are healed by Jesus’ stripes:
We Are Healed Because Jesus Can Relate To Our Suffering
Who better than Jesus to understand our suffering. Psalms 34 reminds us, God is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. In Jesus final days, he was betrayed by one of his disciples, denied by his friend Peter. He was whipped and then given a criminals deathbeing nailed to the cross.
In the midst of all of it, Jesus felt as though he was forsaken by his own Father God has he waited to die on the cross.
No matter the suffering you are experiencing, Jesus gets it. He understands.
As you face betrayal, difficult relationships or whatever it may be, God understands, God cares, God is near at hand to comfort and help. To those who love him, God says, Fear not, for I am with you I will strengthen you, I will help you .

Isaiah : 5 Bible Verses
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.
That means Jesus has paid the price for us on the cross of Calvary. Now, there were many stripes on Him, the result of being lashed and scourged by soldiers. Every stripe on His Body represents a category of disease or affliction, and the sum total of all the stripes represents different sicknesses, diseases, and afflictions. Because of this, you are not a sick person trying to get healed you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick. There is nothing new God is about to do concerning your healing He has done it already.
You are not a sick person trying to get healed you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick.
Know this now, the knowledge of truth is key to deliverance. Truth facilitates freedom. That is why it is important to know the truth about any venture that you undertake in life.
There is nothing that sets free like the truth.
It is true that there are people who got healed and after a while, began to feel some symptoms again. This is because such people have not really grasped the truth about their healing.
Jesus has paid the price with his blood, therefore, youre not permitted to be sick.
