St Peregrine Healing Prayer Service

Our solemn prayer service, offered on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm in the main church, includes a blessing with the relic of St. Peregrine.

The devotion to St. Peregrine and the special prayer service began in 2009, started by then longtime administrative assistant for the parish, Michele Gauvin. Gauvins late father had a devotion to the saint whom he prayed to during his bout with cancer. With the approval of Msgr. John J. McSweeney, pastor of St. Matthew at the time, Gauvin reached out to Father Chris Krymski, director of the National Shrine of St. Peregrine and associate pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago, to help her get the prayer service started at St. Matthew. Over the years, Father Chris has visited St. Matthew several times, with a special visit in 2019 for the 10-year anniversary of the prayer service.

St. Peregrine has been called the wonder worker for his intercession on behalf of those living with serious illness. He is the patron saint of all who are afflicted by cancer, leg ailments or any life-threatening disease. He is also the patron saint of at-risk youth.

Prayer To St Peregrine For Cancer Sufferers

St. Peregrine Laziosi was a Servite priest who was the victim of a spreading cancer in his leg. The disease was so painful and foul that he was scheduled for an amputation.

Peregrine spent the night before the operation in prayer, both for his leg to be saved, and, if God chose this suffering for him to bear, that he would receive it with humility and trust.

In answer to his prayer, Peregrine received a vision of Christ who touched the diseased area of his leg. The next morning, Peregrine found his cancer completely healed. Ever since, St. Peregrine has been the patron saint of cancer patients, skin diseases, AIDS sufferers, and the sick. His feast day is May 1st.
