We Are Healed By His Stripes

The Anthem (Full Song) | Planetshakers

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray We have turned, every one, to his own way And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.

Christ, who was free from sin, took our chastisement and gave us peace. By His bruise, we are saved from an eternity of suffering and estrangement from God.

The Lord, God the Father, delivered Him, God the Son, to die for our sins. This is the message Apostle Paul proclaims in 2 Corinthians: Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

“The shepherd of Israel, and now of the whole world also” became “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” .

What Does It Mean To Be Healed By His Stripes

Just this week, I heard someone quote these scriptures in prayer as they prayed for the healing of a loved one. Lord, Chris is in the hospital. We lift him up to you, by your stripes he is healed. As the prayer ended, I wondered if it was really my place to tell them, the scripture was taken out of context. The power of the cross wasnt meant for our physical healing, rather our spiritual healing.

These two passages are central to the topic of healing, however they are misapplied and often misunderstood. The word healed when translated from both Greek and Hebrew can mean spiritual or physical healing. However the context of both Isaiah 53 and 1 Peter 2 make it clear that they are referring to spiritual healing. The verse is referring to sins and righteousness not disease and sickness.

Have you been wounded by sin, rejection, loss, or betrayal that has cut you to your core? Are these wounds still fresh and open? Like slicing cutting your finger, the negative spiritual effects of painful physical events, leave our souls reeling for comfort, peace, and wholeness. Only Jesus can heal that.

Why Do We Get Sick

There is only one answer, sin! Sin brought forth death, which is in and of itself a sickness. We die daily. And sickness speeds the arrival of death for many. Mankind causes disease by violating the natural laws of health and cleanliness. And some works of flesh spawn disease. Satan, the Devil, is not the author of sickness. We are! But he can and does use it against us. Ask Job!

The Crown Of Thorn Pressed On His Head

And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed in His right hand . Kneeling before Him, they ridiculed Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

The fifth time Jesus Christ shed His blood was when the crown of thorns pressed into His scalp.

The crown of thorns represents the spirit of poverty and the powerlessness that is associated with being financially poor. The book of Proverbs 10:15 says, The rich mans wealth is his fortress the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

The good news is that Jesus through His suffering restored your financial glory and destroyed the spirit of poverty.

We Are Healed Of The Guilt Of Our Sins Through The Cross

Yes weve been forgiven, yes weve been washed clean of our sins by His stripes. But what if we still bare the burden of guilt for our sins? Past actions fester into regrets and become gaping wounds because we are unable to let go of the guilt of what weve done. You may wonder, How could God forgive me of that, I can barely forgive myself.

There are two kinds of guilt: Conviction and Condemnation. Conviction is the Spirit of God gently correcting you and restoring you to Himself. No sin is too great. The latter is what the enemy uses to prevent Jesus stripes from healing us. The enemy loves nothing more than to torment Gods people with the pain of their past.

Sometimes this kind of guilt is a symptom of unforgiveness in our hearts. In Matthew 18:23-25 Jesus tells us how important it is to forgive those who have wronged us.

Physical Or Spiritual Healing

It is disappointing to read posts on the internet condemning this teaching, claiming that by His stripes is referring to spiritual healing, the forgiveness of sins.

If youre wondering the same, I encourage you to look at the original Hebrew.

Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows

Is 53:4

But when we look at the original Hebrew, the word griefs, means sickness and sorrows is translated pains.

This shows that Jesus stripes is referring to our physical healing.

Failure to understand this will cause doubt in your heart and you wont be able to confidently believe God for your breakthrough.

The Rev. Dr. Jean Claude Masuka Maleka and his wife, Francine Ilunga Mpanga Mufuk, join members of a rural community to inaugurate a new water tower made possible by the United Methodist Church in Cote dIvoire and UMCOR, 2020.

    A devotion for Good Friday

He is despised and rejected of men a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes we are healed.

    Isaiah 53:3-5

Today the world is looking for healing from the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovery offered by Jesus Christ can be both physical and spiritual. This Scripture in Isaiah brings us near to the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. God sent him to save the whole world. The passage describes how he was despised and rejected by all men. He suffered too much, and he was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.

Jesus died because of our transgressions and iniquities. He was crushed under the enormous weight of the accumulated evil of the whole world. When we trust the Lord Jesus, and by grace, we are healed through faith in him.

Stuck On Face With Rods And Fists

    Bible recorded the following incident:

Then the high priest tore his robes and exclaimed, He has blasphemed ! What further need have we of witnesses or evidence? See, you have now heard the blasphemy. What do you think? They answered, He deserves to be put to death. Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists, and some slapped Him .

Our face is our glory. It represents our self-image and self-worth. Its the first thing people see about you.

Jesus was beaten in the face to restore our glory and destroy the spirit of slander.

    Isaiah : 5 Bible Verses

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.

That means Jesus has paid the price for us on the cross of Calvary. Now, there were many stripes on Him, the result of being lashed and scourged by soldiers. Every stripe on His Body represents a category of disease or affliction, and the sum total of all the stripes represents different sicknesses, diseases, and afflictions. Because of this, you are not a sick person trying to get healed you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick. There is nothing new God is about to do concerning your healing He has done it already.

You are not a sick person trying to get healed you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick.

Know this now, the knowledge of truth is key to deliverance. Truth facilitates freedom. That is why it is important to know the truth about any venture that you undertake in life.

There is nothing that sets free like the truth.

It is true that there are people who got healed and after a while, began to feel some symptoms again. This is because such people have not really grasped the truth about their healing.

Jesus has paid the price with his blood, therefore, youre not permitted to be sick.

    Isaiah 53 And Jesus Christ

Let’s go through the 53rd chapter of Isaiah and explore the meaning of its text in relation to Jesus Christ.

O Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

“He has no form or comeliness” relates to Christ as He sat upon the foal of an ass He was despised among the people and humbled Himself even unto death.

God became dishonored, for Christ assumed a true human nature. “O marvel at the loving-kindness of the Word, that for our sakes He is dishonored, that we may be brought to honor.”

    Why Werent They Healed

By His Stripes we are Healed

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

Here is Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles. He suffered from a physical condition. You would think God would have granted his prayer for healing. But He didnt! God used Pauls condition to show His ability to provide strength and abilities even when infirmed. Look here

Do you read anywhere in the verse above where Paul prayed for Epaphroditus to be healed? Yet Paul is an Apostle. If anyone is gifted to heal Epaphroditus, Paul is! And what was the mercy Paul spoke of? Epaphroditus didnt die from his illness! And here

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomachs sake and thine often infirmities. 1 Timothy 5:23

Timothy is a disciple of Paul. Where is Timothys faith? And surely Paul would pray the prayer of faith over him for his healing. Nope! And Timothy didnt just suffer with a stomach condition. He was sickly. And he had faith

How Did Jesus Get His Wounds And Stripes

In an effort to understand the truth of these passages, lets take a look at both Isaiah 53:5 and 1st Peter 2:24 in context.

But He was pierced through for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities

The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him

And by His scourging we are healed.Isaiah 53:5

and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness for by His wounds you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

The first time we come across this passage is when Isaiah describes what about happen to Jesus. He describes the suffering of the Messiah and then writes the reasons for His suffering: He was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities .

The prophet Isaiah was pointing out that our sins required an atonement. Our sins required forgiveness. Our sins needed to be washed off each of us. But the traditional way Gods people atoned for sin in the Old Testament was through the blood sacrifice of animals performed at the Temple. In order to provide atonement and to be washed of our sins, a perfect sacrifice was coming for all of mankind: Gods only son, Jesus.

Whenever we address prophecy or prophets of the Bible, we need to understand individuals like Isaiah were sent by God to warn Gods people, the Israelites. These warnings were often not heeded and largely ignored because they were called to repent of their sins and idolatries with the threat of punishment and sometimes reward.

We Are Healed Because Jesus Can Relate To Our Suffering

Who better than Jesus to understand our suffering. Psalms 34 reminds us, God is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. In Jesus final days, he was betrayed by one of his disciples, denied by his friend Peter. He was whipped and then given a criminals deathbeing nailed to the cross.

In the midst of all of it, Jesus felt as though he was forsaken by his own Father God has he waited to die on the cross.

No matter the suffering you are experiencing, Jesus gets it. He understands.

As you face betrayal, difficult relationships or whatever it may be, God understands, God cares, God is near at hand to comfort and help. To those who love him, God says, Fear not, for I am with you I will strengthen you, I will help you .

The Meaning Of By His Stripes We Are Healed

The following is a transcript of the video above featuring Chris DeRoco explaining the true meaning of “By his stripes we are healed”:

I think one of the most damaging, I guess, scriptures that have been used within the church is, “By his stripes we have been healed” And this is coming out of Isaiah 53:5. And people have used that phrase to claim that because Jesus died on the cross, therefore we can expect to be healed in this life and that Jesus actually died for our physical healing in this life. And therefore what’s left is us for then to just appropriate what Jesus has promised us.

Well, we don’t need to get into what Jesus has and hasn’t promised us, but we can look at this phrase in context and it’s clear that Isaiah was talking about the wound of sin being healed of sin. It just says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace. That with his stripes, we are healed.”

Christ Defeated Death By His Death

By His Stripes We Are Healed

He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked– But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

Christ was led to death, yet death could not hold His perfect, sinless body. “Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”

Christ committed no lawlessness “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

The Lord, God the Father, cleansed Him, God the Son, of His wound because His body could not remain subject to corruption and death. The offering made by Christ enables man to receive the same healing and eternal life.

    Easter Hymn of Ancient Christianity

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life!

This was the great, redeeming work of Christ, to bear our iniquities and reconcile us to Him.
