Week 1 After Your Nose Job
At the end of your first week, you can expect to visit your plastic surgeon. He or she will inspect your healing progress and remove the splint. Any stitches will be taken out. By the end of your first week, your swelling will have improved significantly but you may have some bruising under your eyes. During this week you should avoid direct sunlight and vigorous physical activity like heavy lifting.
How Do I Care For Myself After My Nose Job
On the day of your surgery, its important that you have someone available to drive you home and stay the night with you, as you will be groggy from anesthesia. After the surgery, your doctor may place a plastic or metal splint on your nose to help your nose retain its new shape as it heals. You may also have nasal packs or splints in the inside of your nose, helping to keep your septum stable. After your surgery is finished, you will rest for a few hours to ensure all is well and then be sent home.
As you heal and recover at home, you will want to rest with your head elevated above your chest to encourage healing. You should leave whatever splints and dressings you have on for up to a week after surgery. Your doctor will give you more specific instructions after surgery.
In the Weeks After Surgery
For the weeks following your nose job, you should avoid doing anything too strenuous. Dont go running or do any other intense exercise. Dont go swimming as being under the water can damage your healing nose. Try not to blow your nose, chew excessively, or brush your teeth vigorously, as these can put undue stress on your nose.
As much as you can, avoid laughing, smiling, or other facial expressions that require lots of movement of the facial muscles. Wear shirts that you can button up and dont have to pull over your head, as this can cause accidental injury to your nose. Lastly, dont rest eyeglasses or sunglasses on your nose.
Rhinoplasty Recovery With A Nose Cast
If your rhinoplasty involves breaking the nasal bones, many surgeons suggest wearing casts after the rhinoplasty surgery to hold the bones in position. After wearing the cast for a week, surgeons will remove the cast in their office to see what things look like underneath how does the skin look, what does the nose look like, etc.
If youre going to remove it yourself, the key is to do it as gently as possible. Use a lot of steam, try to lift up a few edges slightly, steam it some more, lift up a bit more, etc. After removal, take a picture of the nose and email it to your surgeon.
The rhinoplasty splint is meant to hold the nasal bones in place and not to reduce swelling. Your swelling will resolve on its own, regardless of how long you wear your cast. Since the broken nasal bones have mostly set well after a week, we usually remove the cast at that time. Wearing the splint longer will not make a difference as far as the swelling is concerned.

Most RealSelf members say rhinoplasty recovery isnt very painful, its just very uncomfortable, especially for the first several days. A lot of RealSelf reviewers say it feels like having a bad head cold, with throbbing sinuses and super low energy.

, a Scottsdale, Arizona plastic surgeon, says in a that “some surgeons use nasal packing, which is placed inside your nose during surgery and removed the morning afterward, to help reduce swelling and bleeding.”
Most surgeons use an internal splint, which is usually left in place for the first 5-7 days. This can make you feel congested.
Over these first few days, blowing your nose could open your incisions, so dont risk it.
You might also have a slight headache. Aspirin or ibuprofen will increase your bleeding risk, so try to stick to the pain meds prescribed by your surgeon, if you feel like you need them. Just know that theyll probably make you constipated, so make sure you have laxatives on hand. Its a good idea to take them preventatively, to keep things moving.
Healing from a surgery like rhinoplasty takes a lot of energy, so rest up. Drinking a lot of water will also speed up your healing process.
Your doctor will probably recommend using small, light ice packs on your eyes and cheeks for 15 minutes every hour, to reduce swelling. Just be sure not to put too much pressure on your nose.
Is Face Swelling Normal After Rhinoplasty
Yes. While the nose is obviously the site of the surgery, residual swelling is to be expected in the surrounding areas of the face. You may have bruising and puffiness around your eyes, cheeks, and upper lip in the first couple of weeks after surgery, but most patients find that this resolves fairly quickly, within about the first week, and that they can use cosmetics like concealer to hide any remaining facial bruising if they need to go out in public. About half of patients have no facial bruising at all at 7 days post-op about 40% have only minimal bruising and about 10% have moderate bruising. The amount of facial swelling and bruising depends on the complexity of the procedure as well as the individual person some people simply tend to swell and bruise more easily than others. Regardless, almost all patients can expect any visible signs of facial trauma to have resolved within a few weeks after surgery.

In order to ensure a swift nose job recovery time, there are certain activities that patients should avoid.
Patients are reasonably mobile within 48 hours of the surgery, but we would advise total rest for the first few days of rhinoplasty recovery. Driving should be avoided until two weeks post-surgery. We recommend avoiding UV light, for example using sunbeds, for two to four weeks following rhinoplasty as this can impact upon scarring.
Restricted sexual activity can be resumed after four weeks but vigorous exercise, including going to the gym, should be completely avoided until six weeks.
If a patient follows these instructions, we would anticipate a full recovery between six and eight weeks.
Three To Four Weeks Post
Between three and four weeks after your procedure, you should feel up to moderate-intensity cardiovascular activities, such as swimming, spinning, indoor rowing, or jogging. However, your cartilage and bones are not yet fully stable, so, you should still avoid resistance exercises and vigorous-intensity cardiovascular exercises.

Reshaping Your Nose And Face With Rhinoplasty
Dr. Bardia Amirlak, a board-certified plastic surgeon at UT Southwestern, discusses how our plastic surgeons use 3D imaging and printing to simulate the natural-looking nose patients want and how rhinoplasty helps make that simulation a reality.
If goals of rhinoplasty involve facilitating better breathing as well as improving appearance, the procedure might include removal of the nasal hump, reshaping of the nose tip, reshaping or resizing of the nostrils, or increasing or decreasing the noses overall size and projection.
Rhinoplasty generally takes 1.5 to 3 hours and is usually an outpatient procedure. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils a technique that has a limited ability to make changes. In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the tissue between the nostrils as well as within the nostrils. These incisions heal very well and are barely visible.
If additional cartilage is needed to augment the nose, it is frequently taken from the patients nasal septum. In secondary or revision rhinoplasty which is done to correct deformities caused by a previous procedure this cartilage might be taken from an ear or rib, though sometimes approved cadaver cartilage might also be used. Because of the cartilage needs and potential for scarring, revision rhinoplasty is a more difficult procedure to perform, so its important that its done by a highly skilled plastic surgeon.
When Can I Start Wearing Makeup Again
Makeup may be worn right away after your procedure in areas away from incisions or resurfaced skin. A thick makeup base or concealer with a yellow base is useful to conceal bruising. Generally, makeup should not be applied over incisions or resurfaced areas until 2-4 weeks after the procedure. We always recommendfragrance-free, hypoallergenic mineral based powders.

Keep Your Nose Protected From Trauma
After all this, youre probably always going to feel protective of your nose. But its especially important to avoid any accidental bumps during these first three months of healing, when its more vulnerable.
I had something tragic happen! My dog hit the front, lower half of my nose with his ear! It definitely hurt and swelled a little bit but no blood, no bruising, and I did not hear a crack. During my appt with Dr. Sajjadian, he explained to me that we will just have to watch my nose to see if my dog caused any damage. But once he took off the tape, both he and I were so thrilled with the results we completely forgot about my accident. My nose is definitely still tender and swollen, but I’m amazed how far I’ve healed in such a short period of time. Everything looks wonderful and I am so happy!! I now only have to wear the tape at night for the next 4 months. –
What Are The Stages Of Swelling Post Rhinoplasty
While most swelling from rhinoplasty goes down within a few weeks, swelling may initially get worse before it gets better, so dont be alarmed if it is worse on day three or four than it was immediately following surgery. Every patient is different, so recovery times vary, but generally speaking, most patients can expect to look normal after about three to four weeks, with a small amount of residual swelling and tenderness lasting about three months though it is usually only noticeable to the patient themselves.
The thicker the skin is, the longer it takes for the final outcome to be achieved. For this reason, patients who have thick skin preoperatively, that their outcome may take closer to 18 months, rather than 9 to 12 months. Additionally, if a patient is undergoing a revision rhinoplasty procedure, the final results are more likely to take a greater amount of time, versus a primary rhinoplasty. This occurs because the skin soft-tissue envelope is thicker and less compliant in revision rhinoplasty patients.

How To Help Swelling After Rhinoplasty
Swelling after rhinoplasty can be reduced by keeping the head elevated, which includes while sleeping. Ice packs may also be used to reduce puffiness and discomfort, especially in the first 48 hours after surgery, but should not be used for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time, and should be wrapped in a clean towel rather than applied directly to skin. While using ice packs, be careful to avoid any sutures and be sure not to move any splints or tapings out of alignment. Swelling can also be reduced by drinking plenty of water and avoiding especially strenuous sports or activities for the first few weeks after surgery. It is okay to be up and active as you feel ready, but take care not to overexert yourself initially. Also, be sure to eat a nutrient-rich diet as you heal. Foods rich in an enzyme called papain, like fresh pineapple or papaya, can help the body eliminate bruises more quickly. Try to avoid salty foods, as they can increase swelling.
Your surgeon may also employ different techniques during and after surgery to help reduce swelling and speed up the healing process, such as the use of platelet rich plasma and steroid injections. You may also be prescribed antibiotic and vitamin-infused topical ointments, or sterile saltwater sprays to keep the nose hydrated.

Whats The Purpose Of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves the noses appearance, symmetry, and functionality. How Long Does Bruising Take To Heal After Rhinoplasty
Bruising around the eyes and cheeks is a typical post-operative side effect of rhinoplasty. The vast majority of patients endure minor bruising and swelling following a nose operation as part of the bodys healing process.
Not every patient will have bruises after a nose job, but bruising is most typically noticed under the eyes. Simply said, bruising occurs when blood vessels along the eye area become lodged beneath the skin, giving the area a purple or blue look. During rhinoplasty, blood vessels around the nasal structure are frequently disrupted around the orbital rim of the eye, producing the appearance of a black eye.
On the other hand, any post-operative bruising should disappear in 7 to 10 days. You can apply ice packs to the cheek or eye area for 3 days after the surgery if you want to speed up the process and help any bruises heal more quickly.

What Are The Healing Stages Of Rhinoplasty
The initial healing stage is about ten days. This is the period when you will need to be most vigilant about aftercare instructions, and plan to take a break from your normal activities to allow everything to heal. After ten days, much of the bruising and swelling will have dissipated, and any lingering effects can be concealed with makeup. After about three weeks, youll likely have no readily apparent signs that you ever had surgery, and can resume non-weight-bearing exercise. At three months, almost all swelling has gone down permanently, and the nose looks basically like the final result. It will take a year or two for the nose to totally settle into its new structure, but at three months, the vast majority of rhinoplasty recovery is complete.
