How To Heal Bulging Disc

What Is A Herniated Disk

Can My Herniated , Bulging Disc or Sciatica Heal, How Long

A herniated disk is an injury of the spine . You have a series of bones in your spine, stretching from the base of your skull to your tailbone. Between your vertebrae are round cushions called disks. The disks act as buffers between your bones, allowing you to bend and move with ease. When one of these disks tears or leaks, its called a herniated disk.

When A Disc Herniates

At any given time, we may have discs bulging out of shape. When the nucleus of a disc pushes out and even passes through the walls of the disc, this is called a herniated disc of disc herniation. Pain can strike immediately.

The spinal column houses the spinal cord and at each level of the spine, nerves branch off from the spinal cord. The discs separate the vertebrae and allow space between them for these nerves to travel to the different parts of our body.

If the disc herniates, the nucleus can press against one of the nerves and this pressure can cause pain. Additionally, the material of the nucleus causes a chemical irritation to the nerve and pain. When there is an injury to the disc, the body has a natural inflammatory response to heal an injury. Inflammation is a good thing, but if pain persists, the inflammation can be a source of pain in itself. This is why we often take anti-inflammatories to dampen down the inflammation.

For discs in the neck, this can lead to shooting pains in the arms. In the lower back, it can cause pain in the buttocks or legs as pressure is put on to the sciatic nerve, sciatica. The lower back has five discs and depending on which disc has herniated, the pain is felt in different parts of the leg or buttocks as different nerves control different parts of our lower limbs.

What Can I Do At Home To Relieve Herniated Disk Pain

In most cases, pain from a herniated disk can go away in time. To ease pain while your disk heals, you can:

  • Rest for one to three days, if the pain is severe, but it important to avoid long periods of bed rest to prevent stiffness.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Apply heat or ice to the affected area.

Movement Posture And Hydration

The reason movement and good posture are so important is because discs help to support the pressure of our body. If we dont move, the constant pressure pushes the nucleus of the disc against the outer wall and over time, weakens it.

The discs absorb water from their surroundings and if they are under constant pressure , they cannot absorb water. Without water, the discs lose some of their hydrostatic pressure and shock-absorbing properties. Additionally, as the discs lose water, the walls of the disc can dry out and weaken, making them less able to keep the nucleus inside, rather like the weakened walls of a dam which holds back water.

We constantly talk about posture with our patients.

Sitting and slouching squashes the life out of our discs. This is because if we slouch over we put a lot of pressure on the discs at the base of the spine.

When we slouch in one position, we squash the front side of the disc and the nucleus of the disc is pushed back hard against the rear of the disc. The front side can slowly dry out and weaken whilst the back side of the disc can weaken because it has the nucleus forced back against it for long periods.

Pressure can also be exerted on the body when the surrounding muscles are weak, meaning there is less support for the discs and they are squashed even more. The muscles in our back and our core muscles provide essential support to keep the spine supported and strong, which takes excess pressure off the discs.

Back pain is something a very large number of people have to deal with at one point or another. Can Disc Herniations Heal On Their Own

Both disc bulges and herniations will eventually heal on their own, but the how and why differ significantly. A disc bulge can heal relatively quickly . Even significant bulges do really well with conservative care . The typical treatment for this includes specific exercises where pressure is used to restore normal mobility to the spine. Depending on the size and direction of the disc bulge, a physiotherapist can guide you on which activities are safe, and which should be avoided!

If you have a herniation, it will heal on its own but some opt for surgery as it is a faster fix than the wait it out method, as these patients are usually in a lot of pain. Patients suffering from herniations can either wait for their body to naturally dehydrate this jelly-like material, or they choose a surgical path. Treatment options for herniated discs are more focused on pain management, maintaining mobility and strength, eliminating habits that are worsening the problem, and preventing atrophy that comes from disuse.

Meanwhile, if a patient is suffering from radiculopathy, some physiotherapists can provide acupuncture in the early stages for pain management when activity tolerance is low due to pain.

Speaking of pain management, its important to note that while doctors will often prescribe pain medication for these types of injuries, this helpful step does not treat the herniation or bulge directly!

Can A Bulging Or Herniated Disc Heal Naturally

How to Fix a Bulging Disc in Your Lower Back | RELIEF IN SECONDS!

A herniated or bulging disk may take a long time to recover naturally. That is not to say that its not possible to heal a herniated disc naturally.

However, what is defined as natural does not entail just carrying on with ones life as if the herniated disk is not there. Rather, it implies making minor adjustments that are not invasive, in order to facilitate the recovery of the disc.

These recommendations will be discussed in detail further down below.

What Causes Slipped Discs

A slipped disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weak or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out. This can happen with age. Certain motions may also cause a slipped disc. A disc can slip out of place while you are twisting or turning to lift an object. Lifting a very large, heavy object can place great strain on the lower back, resulting in a slipped disc. If you have a very physically demanding job that requires a lot of lifting, you may be at increased risk for slipped discs.

Overweight individuals are also at increased risk for a slipped disc because their discs must support the additional weight. Weak muscles and a sedentary lifestyle may also contribute to the development of a slipped disc.

As you get older, you are more likely to experience a slipped disc. This is because your discs begin to lose some of their protective water content as you age. As a result, they can slip more easily out of place. They are more common in men than women.

What Causes A Herniated Disc In A Car Accident

Can A Bulging Disc Heal On Its Own?

You can herniate a disc in a car accident, for example: the sudden, jerking movement can put too much pressure on the disc, causing it to herniate. Or you can herniate a disc by lifting a heavy object incorrectly, or by twisting extremely.

How is a herniated disk different from a ruptured disk?

A spinal disk has a soft, jellylike center encased in a tougher, rubbery exterior . Sometimes called a slipped disk or a ruptured disk, a herniated disk occurs when some of the nucleus pushes out through a tear in the annulus. A herniated disk, which can occur in any part of the spine, can irritate a nearby nerve.

    How Are Bulging Discs Diagnosed

If you have pain that could be from a bulging or herniated disc, your doctor will give you a physical exam. Youre also likely to have one or more imaging tests. These include spinal X-rays, computed tomography scans , and magnetic resonance imaging scans. Your doctor may recommend an electromyogram to check the condition of affected nerves.

How Is A Herniated Disk Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider will do a thorough exam. During the physical, your provider will assess your pain, muscle reflexes, sensation and muscle strength. Your provider may also order tests such as:

    • Magnetic resonance imaging : The most common and accurate imaging test for a suspected herniated disk is an MRI.
    • X-rays: Getting X-rays helps rule out other causes of back or neck pain.
    • Computed tomography : A CT scan show the bones of your spine. Herniated disks can move into the space around your spinal cord and nerves and press on them.
    • Myelogram: A myelogram involves an injection of dye into your spine using X-ray guidance for a CT scan. The dye can reveal a narrowing of the spinal canal and location of your herniated disk.
    • Electromyogram : This test involves placing small needles into various muscles and evaluate the function of your nerves. An EMG helps determine which nerve a herniated disk affects.
