Skin picking is an addiction that can be difficult to break. However, it is possible to heal skin picking with these five simple steps:
What Should Patients Expect About The Size Of A Skin Cancer Surgery Wound And The Resulting Scar
Its important to know that the wound that will be created during surgery on a BCC or SCC will be bigger than you might have guessed in advance, says Dr. Khorasani. For one thing, while your skin cancer may have looked like a small red spot when diagnosed, that can be just the tip of the iceberg. There may be extensions, or roots, of the cancer that are not visible from the surface that will be discovered during surgery, requiring the removal of more tissue.
Dr. Kober explains how a circular wound becomes a straight-line scar. If you try to bring that circle together, the two ends pucker up and become raised, she says. To correct for that, the surgeon has to remove those little puckers on either end. So before the wound is closed, the surgeon shapes the wound so it looks more like a football than a baseball . It does lengthen the scar, but it means that the scar lies flat and will look its best.
The ratio between the diameter of the circle to the length of the ellipse is 1 to 3, Dr. Khorasani explains. Therefore, if you do the math, the length of the scar will be about six times the diameter of the original lesion. The 10 fellows whom I taught Mohs surgery call this The Khorasani 1 to 6 Scar Rule, he says. They all still use it to educate their patients.

Excoriation Disorder: When You Cant Stop Picking At Your Skin
Once in a while, you might pull at a hangnail or pick at a scab. But some people pick at their skin repeatedly and constantly. The irritation damages their skin and can lead to sores and scars. Theyre distressed, but they cant seem to stop. They may have trouble tackling their everyday activities.
This condition is called excoriation disorder, and its also known as dermatillomania, psychogenic excoriation, or neurotic excoriation. Its considered a type of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Skin-picking is quite common, said Divya Singh, MD, a psychiatrist at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottdale, AZ.
The condition is relatively rare and typically begins around the start of puberty. Its more common in females than males, and people with skin-picking disorder often have skin conditions like acne or eczema.
It sometimes starts with a small scab or rash and picking at it means it never heals. Or it could start with picking at the skin around the nails as a way to relieve stress. For some people its a nervous habit. Others are trying to remove a perceived skin flaw. It can come and go over time.

Second, if you, like many of us, merely have the kind of anxiety that is annoying but not quite life-altering, be sure to integrate practices into your life that soothe your anxiety. I utilize pretty much all of them. It is helpful to build them into a daily routine as well, so you do not get off track. Yoga, breathing exercises, hydration, and regular cardiovascular exercise are enormously helpful to me when it comes to managing my anxiety, to the point that, when I am in steady practice, my anxiety is almost nonexistent, which makes my skin very happy.

Put Away The Lotions And Soaps
While your skin is trying to heal, its best to stash away all your soaps, lotions, and other body products that contain fragrances and other harsh ingredients. Your skin will have a hard time healing when it is being bombarded by ingredients that harm it. Read your labels and hide away any products that contain harsh chemicals or additives. This can help your skin heal faster and also stay less irritated in the future.
When In Doubt Cover Your Skin
In most cases, skin that is suffering from severe dryness or an injury of some sort should be covered. When you keep the affected area as moist as possible, it helps lock-in key nutrients necessary for healing. In addition, covering the area can keep harmful bacteria or debris from hindering the healing process.
After cleaning the affected area properly , you can cover it with a Band-Aid, gauze, or other clean fabric. Be careful not to cover the area all day, however, as the skin needs room and time in fresh-air to heal. Always be sure to change this cover regularly throughout the day.
