    Most people ice for 20-30 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days after surgery. You can ice for longer periods of time if it is comfortable for you.

    When and how long to ice an injury is critical in determining how effective and safe this treatment is. Ice packs should be applied to the injured area as soon as possible. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the best way to apply ice to the wound and how it will aid in healing. When an injury has already been traumatised, ice it for about 10 minutes. In the first 24 hours, ice should not be used unless a doctor orders it. If ice is not applied correctly, it can cause frostbite and damage to the delicate tissues. A lack of movement and too much rest can lead to fatigue and a slower healing process. The term optimistic loading refers to starting gentle exercises after a short period of rest and gradually increasing the amount of exercise to improve strength and range of motion. Swelling must be reduced in order for blood to circulate, and it must be raised above the heart in order to accomplish this.

    A meniscus tear is a common injury that affects a structure inside the knee called the meniscus.

    In fact there are two menisci in our knees: one on the medial side and one on the lateral side . We call these the medial meniscus and lateral meniscus.

    The meniscus is a very important structure. It is made of tough fibrocartilage and acts as a shock absorber inside the knee.

    When we walk and stand, forces travel through the tibia into the femur . The meniscus helps to cushion this force and protect the other structures within the knee.

    The meniscus is tightly bound down to the top of the tibia. This means that it can act as a very effective shock absorber but it is vulnerable to twisting due to it being so tightly attached.

    Luckily, our knees are only designed to move forwards and backwards. Most of the time, the meniscus does not have to cope with much twisting.

    However, in some unfortunate cases a twist can occur which can lead to a meniscus tear in the knee.

    We call this an acute meniscus tear.

  • If you go to most pain practices if you fail physical therapy and surgery is not recommended, they may recommend a steroid injection, which can help temporarily reduce inflammation in and around the knee and meniscus, but this is not advised as steroids as we know can cause damage to the joint cartilage, inhibit healing, and has a host of other negative side effects.
  • An injection of something called hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occuring substance that makes up part of the lubricating fluid of the knee joint, could be used for temporary pain relief. It does not help repair the area but may provide a few months of symptomatic benefit if there is not severe arthritis in the knee.
  • If you actually want to try and get the body to heal that meniscus on its own when rest and physical therapy has not do the job, PRP has excellent evidence that it helps with meniscal injuries as well as mild to moderate arthritis that can be associated with these issues. PRP, when used in the right hands, should be injected precisely with ultrasound guidance into the torn parts of the meniscus, into any ligaments or tendons that may be injured or loose, and into the knee joint itself for optimal results.
