Sources Of Posterior Heel Pain

Posterior heel pain, or pain behind theheel, is most commonly due to one of these causes:

  • Achilles Tendonitis: Achilles tendonitis is a common diagnosis of inflammation of the tendon in the back of the ankle. Most commonly pain is experienced directly over the tendon, but it may also be at the point where the tendon attached to the heel bone . Degenerative changes such as small tears within the tendon and calcium deposits within the tendon can contribute to this problem.
  • Retrocalcaneal Bursitis: There are several bursae behind the heel bone that protects this area of contact. Often these bursae can become irritated leading to bursitis, inflammation and posterior heel pain.
  • Calcaneal Spur: A bone spur can form over a long period of time at the insertion of the Achilles tendon in the back of the heel. This bony prominence can grow over time, and is referred to as a “pump bump.” This extra bone can irritate the surrounding tissues and lead to bursitis of the surrounding bursa.

Other causes of posterior heel pain that should also be considered include plantar fasciitis, stress fractures of the calcaneus, and os trigonum syndrome.

Diagnosis of the cause of posterior heel pain can be difficult as it is not uncommon for these diagnoses to coexist. For example, a patient with a bone spur of the calcaneus may have bursitis in that area as well. Because of this, all of these diagnoses must be considered for effective treatment of posterior heel pain.

When To Call A Doctor

If you are unsure of the cause of your symptoms, or if you do not know the specific treatment recommendations for your condition, seek a medical evaluation.

Here are some definite signs that you should be seen by a healthcare provider:

  • Inability to walk comfortably on the affected side
  • Heel pain that occurs at night or while resting
  • Heel pain that persists beyond a few days
  • Swelling or discoloration of the back of the foot
  • Signs of an infection, including fever, redness, and warmth
  • Any other unusual symptoms

Stretches For Plantar Fasciitis

One of the best stretches you can do to facilitate recovery and help prevent plantar fasciitis from coming back is a standing calf stretch with your toes on the wall. Its almost like youre stretching from both ends, Steege says.

To do it, prop your toes against a wall so your legs are straight, and step one foot back. Keeping both legs straight, gently push your body toward the wall so you feel a stretch in your front foot and calf. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds. Switch sides, performing two or three times per side.

Another effective calf stretch is known as the runners stretch, according to Quirolgico. To do it, begin standing in front of a wall at arms length from it with your feet hip-width apart. Place both hands flat against the wall and bend one knee. Step the other foot back so your leg is straight, heel flat on the ground. Keep both feet pointed forward and gently press into the wall until you feel a stretch in your back calf and heel. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds and perform two or three times per side.

Stretch out your calves both before and after exercise.

Plantar fasciitis is usually more painful after youve been immobile for a period of time . To ease pain and loosen up the plantar fascia, roll your foot over a lacrosse, tennis, or small massage ball for a few minutes before you stand up. Youre giving input to those tissues to try and calm them down before you start moving, Steege says.

Research And Statistics: How Common Is Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, with about 10 percent of the population experiencing it in their lifetime.

Hydrotherapy will be done daily to help with the wounded area.
