Allergic Contact Dermatitis Of The Nose
Allergic contact dermatitis means the skin has touched something that provoked an allergic reaction, causing inflammation and irritation.
“Contact” means the allergic reaction came from touching something, not from consuming something. The first exposure to the substance sensitizes the immune system, and then the second exposure actually causes the symptoms.
The most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis are:
- Nickel, a metal often used in belt buckles, the buttons on pants, and jewelry, including piercing jewelry.
- Poison ivy.
- Various types of perfumes, including those founds in soaps, fabric softeners, and detergents.
- Of course, there are many more.
Symptoms include red, itching, scaling, flaking skin that may be painful due to the irritation and inflammation.
Diagnosis is made through first avoiding contact with any suspected substance, to see if the dermatitis clears. Patch testing can be done if the results are not certain.
Treatment involves fully avoiding the allergy-provoking substance and using topical steroid cream as prescribed. Cool compresses and calamine lotion can help to ease the discomfort.

The basic underlying pathology for this kind of condition is an injury to the membranes of the inside of the nostril, which in medical terminology is called the nasal vestibule. Accordingly, the condition is called nasal vestibulitis. The injury to the membrane could be self-induced, such as cases of clipping hair or scratching the inside of the nostril with a fingernail. Alternatively dry nasal passages, which is more common in winter, can also lead to a breakdown of the usual defense barriers of the skin and result in an injury. Once these defense barriers are compromised, bacterial infection can penetrate deep into the nasal membranes and give rise to chronic infection. The usual bacteria that is implicated in these kinds of infections is Staphylococcus aureus.

Skin Care For Incision Scabs
It is completely normal for your incision to have a scab. This is a good indication that your incision is healing, as a scab is an early part of the process that fills in the incision with new skin and tissue, closing the wound.
If pus or fluid is oozing from your incision make note of the amount and alert your surgeon. But you don’t need to be alarmed about a scab.
It is important to not pick at your scab. It is equally important that you do not scrub at your scab during your shower.
Removing the dry scab intentionally can increase scarring and slow healing. This is true even if the scab is forming around your stitches and making them appear discolored or dirty.
Wash the area gently during your shower with the same amount of soap you would use on an area of your body that does not have a scab. Rinsing well is essential, as soap may irritate the wound.
What To Do If You Get A Nose Cold Sore
First, don’t panic! A nose cold sore is just like any other, even if located somewhere else. Cold sores aren’t generally dangerous and dont cause permanent damage to the skin. If you have boils in your nose, youâll be prescribed oral antibiotics as well as topical ointments. Your doctor may also recommend that you apply a hot compress three times a day for about 15 to 20 minutes. If the boils donât go away after taking antibiotics, your doctor may need to surgically drain them. Itâs important to treat these boils to prevent further complications.
