Jesus Heals A Blind Man Bible Lesson:
Jesus and the disciples passed by a blind man who was begging for money. The disciples asked Jesus, Who sinned? The man, or his parents? They thought bad things happened to people because of sins they committed.
- Why do bad things happen in this world?
Sometimes we do actions or behaviors that make bad things happen because all actions have consequences. But when bad things happen for no apparent reason, we must remember that we live in a world that is fallen.
Jesus explained to the disciples that the man was not blind because of sins from the man or his parents, but that the man was blind so God could glorify Himself. That was the reason why God allowed this man to be blind since birth. Jesus spat on the ground, made some mud, placed the mud on the mans eyes, and then told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam. The man washed and then came back seeing! God was glorified!
But then people started questioning what happened. Surely this isnt the same man? They asked, This must be someone else. They couldnt believe that such a miracle could happen. They would not listen to the mans testimony.
The people took the man before the Pharisees. It didnt help Jesus at all that He had healed the man on the Sabbath Day. The Pharisees asked the man what had happened. He told his story once again.
The Pharisees claimed that no man of God would heal on the Sabbath Day.
The Purpose Of The Seventh Day Is To Restore Man
By healing these non-emergency cases so often on the Sabbath, without being asked to do so, Christ furthermore implied that the purpose of the Sabbath is to restore man. For this purpose, the seventh day has been set aside . Since Christians are people that abide by the Law of Christ , which is His teachings, Christians must cease other work on the seventh day to focus on this work.
John The Baptist Recognized The Messiah
As the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and Galilee, John sent 2 disciples to ask Jesus about His identity: Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? Jesus replied, Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight .
Jesus went on to say that He healed the lame, cured leprosy, restored hearing to the deaf, even raised the dead.
But He need not say more.
Once John heard Jesus had restored sight to blind eyes, his mind would have immediately flashed back to the prophecies of Isaiah. The indisputable Messianic identity was tied to this critical piece of information: the ability to restore sight was a sure indication that this must be the long-expected Christ.
John was satisfied. And he took that knowledge to the grave, because he was beheaded by Herod mere months or weeks later.
Takeaway: The multiple predictive threads working their way through the various books and centuries of the Old Testament are fulfilled completely, astonishingly, wonderfully in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah of God.
In the Sermon on the Mount, He warned about the need to absorb the light of His truth with our spiritual eyes: The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! .

9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.2 His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the mans eyes.7 Go, he told him, wash in the Pool of Siloam . So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, Isnt this the same man who used to sit and beg?9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, No, he only looks like him.
But he himself insisted, I am the man.
10 How then were your eyes opened? they asked.
11 He replied, The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.
12 Where is this man? they asked him.
I dont know, he said.
Doing Good Is Allowed On The Sabbath

By healing on the Sabbath and by explaining this as the Fathers work , Christ implied that all work necessary on the Sabbath to accomplish the Fathers purpose to redeem and restore man is in harmony with the Sabbath. In the healing of the mans withered hand, Christs defense was that He is doing good, and that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath . To do good is to assist people or animals that are in distress. Healing is a good example of doing good.

Why Does Matthew Say That Jesus Healed Two Blind Men Outside Jericho When Mark And Luke Only Say One
Q. and Luke both tell the story of Jesus restoring a blind mans sight on the road outside Jericho. Matthew tells the same story, but he says that two men had their sight restored. Why is there a difference?
Youre asking about the phenomenon that gospels scholars sometimes refer to as Matthean doubling. This isnt the only place where Matthew seems to turn one character into two.
First, in the story youre asking about, there definitely seems to have been just one person involved. Mark even tells us what his name wasBartimaeus. The details of the story are the same in all three gospels. In Mark and Luke, this man calls out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! The crowd tells him to be quiet, but he shouts all the louder. Jesus hears him and calls him over and asks what he wants. He asks to have his sight restored, and Jesus heals him. In Matthews version, two men call out, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us! The crowd tells them to be quiet, but they shout louder. Jesus calls them over and asks what they want. They ask to have their sight restored, and Jesus heals them. The only difference is the two men in Matthew versus the one in Mark and Luke. All three writers specify the same setting, on the road outside Jericho, and the same time, as Jesus was heading to Jerusalem at the end of his life. So Matthew doesnt seem to be relating a separate incident. Hes doubling a character in the same incident.

Condemn The Jewish Authorities
One of Christs major messages in these chapters was to condemn the Pharisees as religious thieves and robbers, coming to steal and destroy. He said to them:
If you were blind, you would have no sin but since you say, We see, your sin remains .
You do not believe because you are not of My sheep .
I am the door of the sheep , he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way , he is a thief and a robber .
I am the good shepherd the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd , sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees because he is not concerned about the sheep.
The Sabbath healing miracles had the same purpose. By healing on the Sabbath, in direct contravention of the traditions , He condemned the Pharisees rule and the foundation of their authority, which was their traditions.
Isaiah Predicted The Messiah Would Heal Blindness
The Hebrew people understood that the coming Messiah, or Christ, would be identified as the One who could restore sight to the blind. In Israels history as recorded in the Old Testament, people had been healed of leprosy and other maladies. Three times the dead had been raised to life.
But the restoration of sight was the sole purview of the Messiah, twice predicted by the great Hebrew prophet Isaiah.
Here the prophet describes the future joy of Israels redeemed at the coming of the Messiah: The desert and the parched land will be glad the wilderness will rejoice and blossomthey will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our Godyour God will come, he will come with vengeance with divine retribution he will come to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened.
And again as he penned Isaiah 42, the prophet was declaring predictively what came to be recognized as a Messianic passage describing the Servant of the Lord: I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind.
