The Center For Wound Healing And Hyperbaric Medicine

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work

Saratoga Hospital Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine

When you breathe oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure, oxygen is transported on hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Under pressure, however, oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord, lymph, and other body fluids. It is therefore easily delivered to all tissues, including those with a poor blood supply. Therefore, even areas that have been deprived of oxygen are afforded the tremendous healing benefits of oxygen.Stroke is perhaps the most dramatic example of what can happen when oxygen delivery to a vital organ is cut off. During a stroke, a blockage or bleeding in blood vessels in the brain interrupts the flow of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood. As a result, cells in affected area die or are damaged, resulting in speech, vision, mobility, or other problems. When these areas are infused with massive amounts of oxygen during a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, damaged brain cells literally wake up.

Is Hyperbaric Medicine Safe

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and evidence-based treatment proven to speed the healing process in certain types of wounds. In fact, many patients find it relaxing! The clear chambers are equipped with televisions and comfortable bedding, so patients are able to watch their favorite television shows or a movie, or even sleep. A typical course of treatment involves the patient spending about 90 minutes a day in the chamber five days per week over a four- to six-week period.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Washington Hospital Experience: Washington Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine

Oxygen is the key element to life and healing. Without oxygen for even a few minutes, the brain tissue dies. Under increased atmospheric pressure, oxygen saturates the red blood cells and dissolves up to fifteen times the normal amount into the blood plasma, transporting oxygen deeper into the body via the lymph, intestinal fluid and cerebrospinal fluid, thereby maximizing tissue oxygenation. The increased oxygen stimulates growth and repair processes. This process is called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or HBOT. HBOT is beneficial for treating a variety of conditions like Skin Grafts, Ulcers, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Pain, Cerebral Palsy, Chronic Fatigue, Alzheimers, Autism, Lyme disease, Crohns disease, Sports injuries and Macular degeneration. Immune disorders like Lupus, AIDS & HIV, Diabetes, conditions associated with shortage of oxygen and blood supply like problem Wounds, Gangrene and Anemia would also benefit.

What Does Hbot Feel Like

At the beginning of treatment, you will experience a fullness feeling in your ears, like on an airplane. You will be educated before treatment on how to clear your ears so this fullness feeling goes away.

The temperature inside the chamber will increase just slightly while the chamber pressurizes, some patients dont even notice this change. For those who do the assigned technician will be able to make the environment more comfortable.

During treatment you can relax, sleep, watch tv or listen to music.

At the end of treatment, while the chamber depressurizes, you will experience a similar fullness feeling, but you wont need to clear your ears, they will clear on their own.

What Should I Expect At My First Appointment

The first appointment consists of an assessment by our skilled wound care team, a review of your medical history, blood tests, and recommendations for your treatment plan. Please be sure to bring to this appointment your medical records, insurance information, a list of current medications, and a list of your allergies. You should expect to spend several hours at the clinic.

How Much Time Should I Allow For Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Private hyperbaric sessions run 75 minutes in length.

At Ontario HBOT, all of our chambers run ON TIME*. This means that your scheduled time is when are you going into the chamber. Patients are advised to come early in order to change into the cotton scrubs provided, go to the washroom etc.

In addition, there is no formal reception area requiring you to check-in before every treatment. This allows for a very efficient “in-and-out” experience, especially for those doing a multiple treatment protocol.

*Please allow for an extra 10 – 15 minutes due to unforeseen circumstances that may arise

Time May Not Heal All Wounds But We Would Like To Heal Yours

We are all susceptible to different types of wounds throughout the stages of our life and health. Wounds can be minor or superficial, limited to the outer skin layers, like fluid blisters, skin tears and scrapes. Other wounds are deeper, affecting the underlying tissue structure, like diabetic, pressure, arterial or venous ulcers. Depending on the cause, site and depth, a wound can range from simple to limb or life threatening. We classify wounds in two categories, as acute or chronic. Those classified as acute wounds heal without incident in the expected amount of time. The most common type of acute wounds are surgery related, closely followed by lacerations and burns. Chronic wounds have prolonged healing times, often due to complications including poor circulation, poor diabetic control, ongoing inflammation, or infection. For healing to occur it is important to remove the chronic wound causing agent.

Our Wound Center here at Elliot hospital follows the basic principles of successful wound care, commonly referred to as the ABCs of wound care.

  • Ask the right questions
  • Be thorough with your evaluation of causes of the wound
  • Choose the correct modality of treatment

Following these basic principles we have been able to significantly lower the average healing time and cost to well below the national average.

How Does Scheduling Work At Ontario Hbot

The first treatment commences at 8:00AM, with the last treatment going in around 3:00/3:30PM. All treatments are booked on the hour or half hour.

If you are booked at 8:00AM, doors are open at 7:45AM to allow time to change, use the restroom, pick a movie etc.

Note: All chambers run ON TIME. Your scheduled time is when you are going into the hyperbaric chamber, not when you are pulling into the parking lot.

Wound Care Treatment Plans

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments at the Strong Wound Healing Center

Our approach to wound care is aggressive and comprehensive, coordinating traditional and advanced therapies and techniques that are proven to reduce healing time and improve healing rates. Since non-healing wounds rarely result from a single cause, we begin with a thorough evaluation and diagnostic testing to determine the underlying cause of the wound. A treatment plan is then developed to give patients the best chance for healing. Most treatments are covered by Medicare/Medicaid, HMOs and other private insurance. Depending on the type of wound, the treatment plan may include:

  • Infection control
  • Cellular and/or tissue-based products
  • Compression therapy
